Beatiful Botanical Gardens In Europe

Dat ik gek op planten ben is ondertussen wel bekend lijkt me. Mijn huis staat er vol mee, ik maak er altijd foto’s van en ik droom al tijden van een mooie botanische tattoo. Daarom zal het je ook vast niet verbazen dat ik tegenwoordig op mijn vakantiebestemming altijd opzoek ga naar een botanische tuin. Pas het laatste jaar hoor, waardoor ik een paar mooie pareltjes zoals die in Edinburgh gemist heb. Maar terwijl ik hier over nadacht leek het me een leuk idee om gewoon een lijstje te maken! Een lijstje met de, volgens anderen, mooiste botanische tuinen in Europa. Maar laten we eerst beginnen bij een botanische tuin die ik zelf bezocht en prachtig vond: Botanisk Have in Kopenhagen.

English: If you’ve been following me for a while now you might already know that I just LOVE plants. You probably won’t be surprised that I really love to see some good plants while I’m traveling and thus love to go to a beautiful botanical garden. Bonus points if they have old greenhouses! So I decided to make a small lists with places I still want to see. But first of all I’ll talk about a beautiful botanical garden I’ve already visited: Botanisk Have in Copenhagen!
And yes I’ve written everything in Dutch AND English because I’m crazy, thank you very much!

Botanisk Have Copenhagen

Ik was in Kopenhagen in Mei en dat was dan ook de perfecte plek om de prachtige buitentuin in bloei te zien! Het grootste gedeelte van de kassen was gesloten, maar ik herinner me nog een kas met heel veel cactussen en een kleine maar prachtig ouderwetse tropische kas. Het was er zo tropisch dat mijn camera helemaal besloeg. Deze kassen komen uit 1874 en zijn alleen al van de buitenkant een plaatje om te zien. Het is onderdeel van de universiteit, gelegen in het centrum en dus prima te bereiken. Ik fietste er als een ware Kopenhagenaar heen!

English: I visited Copenhagen in spring, which was the perfect time to see the botanical gardens. They’re part of the university, easy to reach and the entrance is free of charge. The outside garden is huge and beautiful, it feels more like park instead of a garden. Dating from 1874 the greenhouses are beautiful to watch from the outside alone! Only the palm greenhouse is open almost every day, the other ones just very rarely. See the website for more details.

En dan nu de botanische tuinen die op mijn lijstje staan! Hier ben ik dus nog niet geweest maar zou ik in de toekomst graag heen willen. De foto’s zijn dan ook niet door mij gemaakt, als je op de foto klikt vind je de fotograaf.

Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

Al drie keer ben ik in Edinburgh geweest en nog geen enkele keer ben ik in de botanische tuin geweest. Shame on me! Eerlijk gezegd wist ik niet eens dat er eentje was. Tot ik foto’s zag verschijnen op Sibel’s Instagram, waar je sowieso even een kijkje op moet nemen. Vooral de hashtag #plantennerdsontour is wel erg toepasselijk voor deze post.
Maar goed, de Royal Botanical Gardens in Edinburgh. Sibel riep deze tuin meteen uit tot de mooiste ooit. Dat heeft me natuurlijk wel nieuwsgierig gemaakt en daarom staat de tuin van Edinburgh meteen als nummer 1 op mijn lijstje! Volgens Sibel mogen die in Glasgow en Brisbane (goed, dat is niet Europa, maar als je toch in Australië bent…) ook absoluut niet ontbreken. Na wat speuren op Google werd het me al snel duidelijk. Ik bedoel, hoe cool ziet deze kas er uit?

English: I never even knew Edinburgh had such a spectacular botanical garden until Sibel posted some pictures. I have to say I was stunned! It looks like a gorgeous place, with old glasshouses a teeny bit similar to the one in Copenhagen. According to Sibel the gardens in Glasgow and Brisbane (ok, not exactly Europe but look at that picture above! Amazing!) are totally worth putting on your list as well!

Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam

Onze eigenste Hortus Botanicus! Al is het alleen maar voor die mooie zalmroze muur met de cactussen die je over heel Instagram ziet gaan. Kennen jullie het account plantsonpink al trouwens? Wie heeft er eigenlijk ooit bedacht dat roze en planten zo mooi samen gaan?
Maar goed, deze botanische tuin bezoeken staat sowieso op mijn lijstje voor 2017 dus dat gaat zeker binnenkort gebeuren. Een andere bekende tuin is natuurlijk de Hortus Botanicus in Leiden. Hier ben ik ooit heel veel jaren terug heen geweest met school, ik geloof dat toen de befaamde stinkende fallusbloem in bloei stond. De Oude Hortus in Utrecht is ook nog 1 op mijn lijstje.

Hebben jullie nog aanraders?

English: Amsterdam’s own Hortus Botanicus is also on my list. As this is in my country I feel like this should be pretty doable, ha. It’s actually one of my goals of this year to go to the Hortus Botanicus. Just the salmon pink wall in the cacti house is worth it! You might have seen it before, it’s all over Instagram. What is up with pink walls and plants anyway? See plantsonpink for more on that ;)
Another great botanical garden in the Netherlands is the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden, which is the oldest one in the country. The Oude Hortus in Utrecht is on my list as well.

Jardín botánico de Valencia

Deze lijkt misschien wat willekeurig, maar wist je dat deze botanische tuin bekend staat om zijn… zwerfkatten? En wat is nou een betere combinatie dan planten EN katjes? Of klink ik nou te erg als een verstokte vrijgezel?

English: This botanical garden in particular might sound a bit random but it has a very important reason it’s on my list! Apparently it’s flooded with stray cats and what’s better in life than the combination of cats AND plants? I can’t think of any other (except okay, fries and pizza maybe). Or have I just been single for too long?

Botanischer Garten und Botanisches Museum Berlin

Niet helemaal centraal gelegen maar toch ontzettend prachtig: de botanische tuin van Berlijn! Wat een prachtige kassen en zo groot! Het is de grootste botanische tuin van Europa en een van de grootste ter wereld. Hoe gaaf zijn die cactussen? Ze hebben zelfs een aparte kas voor succulents (vetplantjes) en in totaal zo’n 22.000 planten. Ik ben al een paar keer in Berlijn geweest dus dit lijkt me een leuk tripje, eens iets heel anders dan Berlijn zelf. Zoals de naam al verraad zit er ook nog eens een museum bij, dus hier zou ik wel even zoet kunnen zijn.

English: Look at those beautiful, huge greenhouses! It’s actually the biggest botanical garden in Europe. It as about 22.000 different kinds of plants! And all the cacti, so awesome. I’ve been to Berlin a few times now and I think this would be a perfect break from the hustling and bustling in the big city.

The Jardin Botanique Lyon

In Lyon ben ik dan weer nooit geweest, maar als ik er ooit kom denk ik dat een bezoekje aan deze prachtige tuin wel op nummer 1 staat. Misschien niet zo groot als die van Berlijn, maar alsnog de grootste van Frankrijk. Met zo’n 15.000 verschillende planten is er genoeg te zien in de prachtige botanische tuin die al sinds 1857 bestaat.

English: I’ve never been to Lyon but if I’ll go there, I know visiting these beautiful gardens will be the number 1 on my list. It might not be as big as Berlin’s gardens but it sure still is beautiful. Apparently also the biggest one in France. The greenhouses dating from 1857 contain about 15.000 plants.

And sometimes you don’t really need to go to a special greenhouse to enjoy amazing exotic plants, you just need to go to a place like Mallorca! ;)
